Panasonic AJ-PX380

Compact & lightweight shoulder-type P2 Camcorder from Panasonic

The camera is available in two configurations: 380G and 380GF. The 380GF comes complete with a Fujinon zoom lens  and viewfinder, while the 380G is a simple body only camera. The two models don’t differ in their operation.

This camera is a typical ENG operational device, designed for news reporting, events, or similar broadcast applications.

The device uses three ⅓ inch MOS sensors with an effective resolution of 2.2 megapixels. The camera has 4 internal ND Filters (CLEAR, 1/4 ND, 1/16 ND, 1/64 ND) and features a  ⅓ inch bayonet lens mount. There are also adapters available to  allow the use of ⅔ inch optics.

The camcorder uses the AVC Ultra family of codecs. Within this family, the PX380 AVC-Intra 50 or 100 are available. This Panasonic-specific video compression format is based on MPEG-4 / Part 10 for the recording of HD material.  It achieves colour sub-sampling of 4:2:2 at 10 bit with Intra100 and Intra50. The "Intra" indicates that this codec creates real frames, each of which is encoded by itself. Although Long GoP is supported via  AVC-LongG50 / 25.

The camera supports many of the AVC Ultra codec family, including AVC Intra 50/100, AVC-LongG 50, AVC-LongG 25 and AVC-LongG12, although AVC444 and Intra200 are not available in the PX380.

The subjective image quality is equivalent to that of the Sony XDCAM HD 422 . The LongG formats are provided for lower-cost workflows and web applications, or for long duration recording. The AVC-Intra format can be imported into all major editing and post-production systems and is processed natively.

The camera is equipped with two microP2-card slots and a P2 card slot. Additionally, proxies can be recorded on SD cards. It is possible to store them in different modes. Simultaneously recording on two MicroP2 Cards can create identical copies, whilst dual recording enables the generation of proxies stored parallel to the main data. Hot swapping of cards is also possible. Note that the full-size P2 card slot does not support the microP2 adapter.

The camera records various frame rates in 1080i /p, 720p and SD. The frame rates supported are 60p, 30p, 25p and 24p as well as 59.94, 29.97, and 23.98.

Besides common interfaces such as HDMI and SDI, this device also offers network connectivity via Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or USB dongle and 4G / LTE streaming for data transfer functions. It is possible to view and edit metadata on recorded clips. The camera can upload clips while recording, or stream the directly recorded image live.
