Panasonic Lumix S1 series

With the DSLM Lumix S1 and S1R Panasonic now aims to conquer the full-format sector.

S1 and S1R

Following the success of the Four Thirds DSLM GH4 and GH5, Panasonic is now aiming to conquer the full-format sector with the two mirrorless full-frame system cameras LUMIX S1 and S1R.

Both offer videos in UHD 60p, with the S1 up to UHD 30p reading out the full sensor area. The Lumix S1 is based on a CMOS sensor with 24 MP (23. 8 x 35. 6 mm, up to ISO 51. 200), the Lumix S1R on a CMOS sensor with 47 MP (24 x 36 mm, up to ISO 25. 600). There is no low pass filter built in. In addition, an OLED viewfinder with 5. 76 million pixels and a refresh rate of 120 fps is installed. Alternatively, an 8. 1 cm touchscreen LCD can be turned around all three axes.

As lens mount the Leica-L bayonet is used. Together with Leica and Sigma, Panasonic forms an alliance to offer more than 30 lenses by 2020. Adapters for lenses with EF or PL mount are already available.

Both models feature the Dual I. S. image stabilization system. Here, the stabilization of the sensor in the housing and the stabilization of the optics work together "intelligently", which should enable an extension of the exposure time by up to 6 EV levels.

The improved DFD-hybrid-autofocus system not only recognizes faces and eyes, but can also distinguish people, dogs, cats and birds. In Low Light AF mode, the system works in the dark up to a luminance of only -6EV.

The Lumix S1 offers a variety of gamma curves, including industry standards such as Cinelike D/V and Rec709. To reduce post-processing time, a new flat mode with less contrast and saturation is offered for versatile use. A new HLG profile (Hybrid Log Gamma) allows recording in a wider dynamic range and with rich colors in Rec2100.

The Lumix S1 enables video recording up to UHD 60p 4:2:0 in 8 bit directly to SD or XQD card, 4:2:2 color sampling in 8 bit can be output via HDMI. Via an update an improved autofocus as well as recording with up to UHD 60p 4:2:2 10Bit via HDMI output and 30p/25p/24p in 4:2:2 10Bit internal and V Log is enabled. The data rate is currently at a maximum of 150 Mbit/s (UHD). Important to mention is that all codecs so far are Long- GOP.

While both models have recording time limits for 4K/60p and high-speed video, 4K/30p and Full-HD can be recorded without a time limit. The maximum frame rates are 60 fps in 4K and up to 180 fps in Full HD.

There is a 3. 5 mm microphone jack for the line audio input and a 3. 5 mm headphone jack for sound monitoring during recording. In combination with the microphone adapter DMW-XLR1 and professional microphones or other XLR input sources, a better recording sound quality can be achieved.

The Lumix-S cameras are compatible with the Lumix-tether-software, which allows remote control of the camera via USB from a PC and live streaming and direct transfer of images during recording to a PC or to the Lumix Sync smartphone app for i0S/Android. Bluetooth 4. 2 and Wi-Fi at 5GHz (IEEE802. 11ac) or 2. 4GHz (IEEE802. 11b/g/n) are available for wireless communication.


The S1H has recently been optimized and introduced with many functions for videographers.

Even though the sensor and housing are similar to the S1, there are still some differences.

The full-frame sensor offers up to 6K resolution at 24.2 megapixels. Also the dual base ISO, known by Panasonic in the meantime, is integrated. Depending on the setting, ISO640 to ISO5,000 or ISO4,000 to ISO51,200 can be used.

For the first time also H.265/HEVC codecs are offered. HDR modes are also available.

For the first time it is now possible for slow motion recordings both to record the sound and to control the finished recording directly via replay.

In 4K 60fps (including sensorcrop to S35mm) and in FHD up to 180fps are possible. You should know that even in FHD between 132fps and 180fps the sensor is easily cropped. Up to 132fps in FHD the full sensor is read.

As auxiliary functions a waveform, focus assist, vectorsscope and a 2-fold zebra are available, which can be adjusted in its display size. A 5-axis image stabilizer is also part of the program.

As one of the few manufacturers, Panasonic also supports anamorphic recording modes. With the S1H, the correct display for anamorphic images as well as an adjusted image stabilization can be set.

In contrast to the S1, the audio tracks can now be levelled up to -18dB. A LOW setting available in the menu is recommended for particularly sensitive microphones.

The additional ventilation shaft, which was necessary due to the even higher resolutions and data rates, should be emphasized. First tests show that the fan noise usually does not have too negative an effect on the sound quality. However, an external microphone is recommended.
The automatic ventilation can be set in the menu. If the recording is started, the fan shuts down automatically.

The newly designed fold-out display deserves a special mention. Its construction now better prevents the screen from being blocked by inserted monitor cables or headphones.

The on/off switch has also been redesigned and now looks more like Canon products.
