Canon Cinema EOS Cameras

The Canon Cinema EOS series has been available since 2011.

The current models: 

EOS C100 Mark I and II
EOS C200
EOS C300 Mark I and II
EOS C500
EOS C700

The development of the Cinema EOS series was aimed specifically at building HDSLR capability into film and video recording devices. The Cinema EOS series can be rigged with a series of accessories to improve usability, particularly for highend productions. 

Most models are very similar externally and the form factor is close to a medium-format stills camera. The C100 is the entry-level model of the range and the C300 is the middle of the product range. These cameras have been updated and launched as MkII versions. A newly developed sensor and other functions provide significantly improved results. 

The C300 and C500 are available with EF or PL mounts, whilst the C100 is equipped with only an EF mount. 

The series uses a single Super 35mm CMOS sensor with increased performance over their predecessors, including improvements in image noise, detail, moiré and dynamic range. Additionally, rolling shutter artefacts are more successfully suppressed. These artefacts do occur, but in real world conditions, they are rare.  

Canon delivers enormous light sensitivity in this series. ISO 102,400 is possible with some camera models. At up to ISO 20000, there is hardly any noise. 

Canon Log and, depending on the model, Canon log2, are available as logarithmic curves to optimise dynamic range and record the maximum amount of image information. Users must use LUTs in order to reproduce the acquired footage correctly on standard monitors. Through the use of RAW recording it is possible to have extensive post-production and colour correction options available for image manipulation.  

The Canon Cinema series use a new video format developed by Canon: XF AVC. This format is supported by Adobe, AVID, Autodesk, Blackmagic, Apple (FCP X) and Grass Valley. The format uses  MPEG4 AVC / H264 compression, and wraps the essence in an MXF container. 

The format allows recording up to 4K intraframe with 4:2:2 in 10 bit and up to 2K to 4:4:4 in 12 bit. LongGOP recordings are also possible. 

The EOS C700 camera was introduced as a high-end TV production tool, geared towards drama, independent film and documentary use. This camera has a more traditional form factor and is suited towards broadcast and film use, through it lens and battery support.

Canon Cinema EOS C100 Mk II
The C100 Mk II is the entry-level model of the Cinema EOS series. With a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 and AVCHD (MPEG4) or MP4 (AVC / H264) compression up to 60 fps, this model is aimed at video journalists or small scale productions. The camera operates at 24 Mbit/s in 4:2:0 at 8bit. The C100 supports SDHC / SDXC / SD cards in 2 slots.  

The Canon EOS C200 is the new entry level 4K camera supporting MP4 recording in the new Cinema RAW Light format.

The C200 is equipped with an 8.85 Megapixel Super35 CMOS sensor supporting 4K RAW recording. The sensor features Canon’s over sampling HD processing, which uses the full 4K sensor for recording and then processes the video down to HD to give a higher quality image. The camera also supports dual recording in 4K and 2K to enable proxy workflows. This requires use of different media – a C-Fast 2.0 card for the main 4K recording and an SD Card for the proxy 2K or below recording. 

Canon EOS C200
In camera, the Cinema-RAW-Light supports up to 15 f-stops, however when recording in MP4 to Canon LOG3 the C200 reduces this to 13 f-stops. ISO values are adjustable from ISO100 up to ISO102.400 and the camera comes complete with installed optical ND filters with up to 10 f-stops. 

The C200 supports HDR recording, although careful consideration of high quality monitoring is required. 

Recording is supported in 10bit at 4K / 50p and 60p respectively with 12bit at 30p / 25p / 24p. The camera can record high speed at upto 120 frames per second for US broadcast framerates and 100 fps for PAL framerates. 

The camera system is fully compatibility with Canon EF-mount lenses, features 2 XLR inputs with digital and analog audio. The camera outputs to 3G / HD-SDI and HDMI2.0.

The camera, weighs in at 1.5 kg without accessories.

In 2018 Cannon are expected to announce an update for the C200 to allow it to record to the Canon XF-AVC format.

Canon Cinema EOS C300 MarkII
Canon C300 Mark II

This popular self-shooters portable camera is a next version of the very successful Canon EOS C300. The new model records to CFast 2.0 memory cards, supports slow motion and high frame rate recording at up to 120 frames per second, and features dual pixel CMOS autofocus, which is also used in the EOS C100 Mark II. 

The C300 Mark II can record in HD and UltraHD as well as 2K and 4K resolutions. The chroma subsampling for 4K or UHD is 4:2:2 at 10bit, while HD or 2K can be recorded in 4:4:4 and 12bit resolution. Users can choose between Intraframe and LongGOP formats.

This camera has the ability to record simultaneously at 4K Raw onto external devices and at 2K / Full HD proxy files to SD memory card.

The 4K Super35 CMOS sensor records at 8.85 megapixels and allows dynamic capture up to 15 stops. It has a wide ISO range up to ISO 102,400. Built-in ND filters provide a possible further 10 stops of exposure control (in expansion mode)

The camera features an EF lens mount which supports more than 90 of Canon's current interchangeable EF and EF cinema lenses, although other lenses can be used with adaptors.

Canon EOS C500

The C500 is the flagship of the range, offering 4K 10 bit RAW, 2K RGB (4:4:4, 10/12 bit) or Full HD RGB output at upto 60fps. However these high quality recording formats are only possible when using external recording devices. This camera only records in HD on CF cards. The C500 provides a full 12 stops of dynamic range and can be controlled remotely from a computer, tablet or smartphone via an optional wifi adaptor.   

Canon Cinema EOS C700

The C700 is a 4K camera, designed for high-end use. It supports EF and PL lenses and can record at upto 810 Mb/s. The camera can record to a large number of high quality codecs: Canon RAW .RMF, XF-AVC Intra, XF-AVC Long GOP. XF-AVC Proxy ProRes 4444XQ/4444/422HQ/422.

Due to the high bitrate recording options, productions need to decide on their recording format in pre-production as the recording media can only support certain bitrates and configurations:

CFast 2.0 card x 2 for XF-AVC or ProRes recording

SD card for XF-AVC Proxy recording

Use of an external recording device allows for RAW 4096 x 2160, 12bit/10bit, Canon Log 2 recordings.
