Nokia Ozo

Capturing 360° video is challenging, as it requires the use of multiple cameras, as well as stitching the camera outputs together.

If all the settings in the cameras on the rig are not identical, recordings can become unusable and data management can get complicated due to its fragmented nature.

The Nokia Ozo is one of the first, single unit 360° cameras. It features a spherical housing, enclosing eight 2K cameras and eight microphones. It combines the signals from the cameras into a data stream, which is output from the camera using a standard SDI cable. The Ozo includes 500GB of internal solid state storage, which is sufficient for recordings of up to 45 minutes.

The individual cameras scan within a grid of 2048x2048 pixels. The sensors are read progressively and with a global shutter. The base sensitivity is ISO400. The dynamic range spans 10 stops.

This camera handles well and is currently one of a kind. The eight cameras are arranged so that there are four cameras around the middle of the housing, with a further two cameras looking up and another two looking down. Each camera element has a viewing angle of 195°, creating an extremely large area of overlap between the different cameras. (GoPros normally provide a viewing angle of 170°.) This enables the recording of stereoscopic video, although in stereoscopic mode it only covers the centerline +/- 130 degrees. The Ozo records at 30 frames per second.

A special advantage of the camera is the internal recording of full-spherical, spatial audio, i.e. location-based, audio signals. Exports are available in 4.0-, 5.0-, 7.0- or 8.0-channel sound with 48kHz and 24 bits as a PCM .wav file.

Nokia has developed a proprietary format for the recording of video from Ozo. Nokia use a JPEG2000 wrapper to encode the data, but it’s a custom version which allows all the metadata and the original data from the individual sensors to be maintained separately. This gives the user more opportunities to tweak their material. The 360° picture is therefore not stitched in the camera and re-rendered, but stored separately and transferred from the camera into the users editing software. Nokia provides Ozo Remote as a remote for the camera, as well as Live Preview using the Oculus Rift DK2, and Ozo Creator software.

Ozo Creator material can be viewed, edited and transcoded into formats compatible for ordinary production systems. The generated image signal then results in a 10 bit 1920x1080 Full HD video. This includes information such as received timecodes and other formats during the export. The programs offered by Nokia work on Mac OS 10.11 and 10.12, as well as Windows 10. High performing hardware is required.
